Assuming you have already installed Age of Conan on your hard drive, your first step is to load the game via your desktop icon. You will be prompted to create an account and login. Once you login the game will begin to download and install any patches which have been released by Funcom since the release of Age of Conan. The patching process may take some time, as the developers are continually improving upon the game, adding new features and content, and fixing any bugs that crop up. Once you are all patched up the journey begins!

Server Selection

Depending on your geographical location will depend on how many Age of Conan game servers are available to you. If you own the North American version of the game, you will only be given U.S. servers to choose from. If you own the European version of the game, you will only be given European servers to choose from. This is in order to ensure the best playing experience for all, but at the same time means that you cannot play with your friends across the pond unless you own the same version of the game as them.

In Age of Conan there are three types of servers to choose from:

PvP
Player versus Player in which players are encouraged to battle each other.

PvE
Player versus Environment in which players fight against computer generated monsters and characters.

RP-PvP
Roleplaying Player versus Player, these servers have special rules of conduct to encourage roleplaying and bring a more "in-character" feel to the game.

You must select a server prior to going to the Character Creation screen. Servers will be listed along with server load, informing you whether a server has low, medium or heavy population (ie. the number of players using the server). You may have characters on multiple servers at once, but you may only play one character at a time.

Character Selection
Once you reach the Character Selection screen you will be prompted to either create a new character or select from your previously created characters. You may have up to 8 characters created at any given time. You may also delete characters that you no longer wish to play from this screen. Bear in mind that once you delete a character it is gone for good, along with any money or loot that you may have owned on that specific character.

Character Creation
This is where your Hyborian journey will truly begin, where you will choose your character's race, class, appearance and name. Selecting a name for a character is done on a first come, first serve basis. Meaning that if someone else has already selected the name you wanted then you will have to choose another. When customizing the appearance of your character you may select advanced options to further help you create a truly unique appearance for your new character.

Gender
In Age of Conan both male and female characters are created equal. There is no difference between their strengths or their weaknesses. The only differences you will notice between the sexes revolve around appearance. Some armour will look different on a male than it will on a female. Age of Conan is also a "Mature" game, and as such you may choose to adjust breast size for female characters. That is done during Character Creation.

Races

At the time of Age of Conan's release there are three playable races in the game. Choosing a race will limit the classes in which you can play.

Cimmerians
The Cimmerians are a barbarian clan that acknowledge Crom as their god. King Conan I of Aquilonia is Hyboria's most renowned Cimmerian. Life is hard in Cimmeria, but they pride themselves on working with their strength, skill and cunning, and not relying on magic. As such, the Mage archetype is closed to Cimmerians. If you choose to play a Cimmerian you may become a Conqueror, Dark Templar, Guardian, Bear Shaman, Barbarian or Ranger.

Stygians
The Stygians are an ancient, decadent people, born of a culture more than fifteen hundred years older than any of their neighboring kingdoms to the north. Stygians are masters of occult secrets and dedicated to the worship of the serpent-god Set. Stygians may not choose to become Soldiers. As a Stygian you may select from Demonologist, Herald of Xotli, Necromancer, Tempest of Set, Assassin or Ranger.

Aquilonians
The Aquilonians are a people divided behind a front of unity, and threatened behind a show of dominance. Their kingdom, the so-called Flower of the West, is the unrivaled jewel of Hyboria. Aquilonia is the home of King Conan I. Aquilonians may not play Mages. As an Aquilonian you may select from Conquerer, Dark Templar, Guardian, Priest of Mitra, Assassin, Barbarian or Ranger.

Classes

In Age of Conan there are four "Archetypes": Soldier, Priest, Rogue and Mage. Each archetype contains three classes. They are as follows:

Soldier Archetype
Conqueror
Conquerors are a sword-wielding fusion of heavy armor and battlefield command, rare individuals rising from the ranks of Aquilonian generals and barbarous Cimmerian war-leaders.

Guardian
Guardians are the most heavily armored and well drilled soldiers in Hyboria. Capable of withstanding punishment like no other, they also have an array of deadly attacks that deal devastating damage.

Dark Templar
Dark Templars combine heavy armor, martial prowess and blood-thirsty magic with an all consuming desire for triumph.

Priest Archetype
Bear Shaman
Bear shamans can inherit aspects of the great bear like claws, savage strength or adrenaline surges and use spirit totems that heal and counter-attack enemy blows.

Priest of Mitra
Priests of Mitra wield divine power that can aid, heal, and even bring the dead to life.

Tempest of Set
These followers of Set are renowned for the obliteration and ruin that follows in their wake, but like other priests, they have the power to heal en masse and restore life.

Rogue Archetype
Assassin
The most lethal killers of Hyboria, possessing powerful combos, the ability to dual-wield and slip past enemies unseen.

Barbarian
The barbarian is one of the most dangerous and feared sights on the battlefield. Their combat style focuses on strength, aggression, and relentless assault.

Ranger
Rangers are the finest marksmen in Hyboria, capable of stalking an enemy and delivering devastating shots with pinpoint accuracy.

Mage Archetype
Necromancer
Summon and command the undead. Their ghoulish minions are capable of tearing men apart or casting their own death magic.

Demonologist
The mightiest of sorcerers, wielding the power of hell and earth and capable of conjuring pillars of flame or titanic storms of electricity.

Herald of Xotli
Hybrids of the mage and soldier archetypes who wield alien spells and two handed weapons, making them a formidable enemy on the battlefield.
